NUTRITION & DIET
by Christine Nakanishi
F.Y.I. March is National Nutrition Month!
Natural foods for March include Peanuts and Pecans.
Peanuts and peanut butter pack 30 essential phytonutrients and nutrients – like protein, vitamin E, magnesium, phosphorus and manganese- and have zero cholesterol and no trans-fats. In addition to being nutrient rich, a handful of peanuts contains 2 grams of fiber. This is 9% of the fiber you need each day!
Peanut Fun Facts:
- Peanuts are not actually a nut, but a legume, in the family of beans and lentils.
- The average American consumes more than six pounds of peanuts and butter products each year.
- Peanuts are packed with plant-based protein, in fact, peanuts have more protein than any nut.
Pecans are a beneficial source of protein as well. Pecans provide potassium, zinc, vitamin E, magnesium, carbohydrates, and folic acid. They contain mainly polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat – the type considered “heart healthy.”
Studies have found 4 to 5 servings of nuts helps to lower blood pressure. Bon Appetit!
TCM SELF-HEALING TIPS
by Julie de Lagarde, L.Ac.
It’s unbelievable how quickly the seasons turn, but it is that
time again when winter turns to spring. At this time of year the body
naturally wants to cleanse and become more active. To support this,
our dietary choices can begin to have more Liver Qi moving items.
Also, we want to use our acupressure to help activate that Liver energy.
Many ancient cultures around the world swear by the health
benefits of starting the day with a cup of hot water and a squeeze of
lemon juice. This activates the Liver Qi and releases toxins from the
liver. Lemon juice contains anti-oxidants which are known to help
combat cancer cells in the body. Lemons also are high in vitamin C
and folic acid.
A wonderful point for opening up the flow of Liver Qi and
releasing the heaviness that may have accumulated around your
diaphragm during the winter is Liver 14, or Qi Men (Cycle Gate). This
point is found on the front of the body, in the 6th intercostal space
(between the 6th and 7th ribs), or 2 rib spaces directly below the
nipple, on the mammary line. Cycle Gate promotes movement of Liver
Qi, clears phlegm and stagnation, relieves food stasis caused by
eating too much or weak digestion, and alleviates pain in the chest
and upper abdomen. It can be used specifically for acid reflux,
vomiting, abdominal pain, and difficulty breathing. Massage both the
right and left LR 14 for 5 minutes daily – tenderly if it is sensitive
– while breathing deeply. |

PRACTITIONER HIGHLIGHT
Pilates & Capoeira Practitioner: Alessandra Fraga [Ursa]

Alessandra was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She has been working in the US since 1999. In 2008 she fell in love with Pilates and decided to make it her life’s work. She has trained at The Vertical Workshop under Shari Berkowitz and the Power Pilates program. After 600 hours of intensive training Alessandra was well equipped to work effectively with athletes and clients challenged by osteoporosis and other physical handicaps. She infuses her Pilates classes with knowledge, warmth, and compassion!
The precise movements of Pilates’ are designed to perfectly balance strength and stretch, build long lean muscle through core abdominal strength, and increase stamina and stability. Through mat and apparatus exercises one can increase flexibility and coordination while strengthening the muscles; focusing on the whole body rather than on body parts. This method of exercise works for everyone, regardless of age or physical condition and limitation. Pilates has been popular among professional performers and athletes for over 80 years.
Also known as Ursa in the Capoeira world Alessandra (or Ursa) first met and began rigorous Capoeira training with Mestre Boneco. Ursa first came to the US in 1999 when she met up with an old friend in who was living in NYC and began training together. Soon after, she was teaching beginner courses to both children and adults under the supervision of one of Mestre Boneco’s brown cord practitioners.
In 2004 Ursa followed Mestre’s advice and moved to LA. Soon after she arrived, she started teaching at the CBLA (Capoeira Brasil Los Angeles Academy) and the Star Prep Academy (she still teaches at both to this day).
In 2008 Ursa decided to complement her teaching skills by training for a Comprehensive Pilates Program: Power Pilates. As a Pilates teacher Ursa implements her knowledge of Human Anatomy and The Pilates Method to help her Capoeira students gain a better understanding of their own body. She emphasizes avoiding unnecessary exercise that may
Capoeira is a unique style of dance and martial art combined with acrobatic movements and music, an elegant yet physically powerful form of body expression that began 500 years ago during Brazil’s slavery era. Throughout the last two centuries the art has evolved into an urban phenomenal, the quintessential representation of the Brazilian Culture. Capoeira can be a great way to teach one’s body awareness and discipline while developing their self-confidence, coordination and flexibility, also discovering and exploring the musicality and rhythm inside each one of us.

Terri Simon
Om vs. Girl

About nine months ago, one vinyasa at a time In Focus Wellness, made me an addict of channeling my inner snake and obsessed with finding my OM. I never expected that a casual interest in getting my yoga-on was the beginning of a hip opening, chakra discovering, warrior finding, anger ridding, awareness creating practice - that I now find hard to be without. Oh and I lost a few unexpected pounds along the way . . . who doesn’t love that?
As my practice improves, while I feel most confident when I do vinyasa, deep down, I heart bound side angle pose. It is a difficult pose for me and I get busted in class for not being mindful or rushing through it. But over time and as I manage to hold this pose longer, I recognize how easy it is to avoid discomfort. The awareness I find in this pose pushes me to quiet the mind chatter, find focus and muscle through the uneasiness that represents the no bueno things that life sometimes brings my way. I am grateful my teacher, the planks, the warriors and the downward dogs that help me manage the daily chaos of life and make sure my skinny jeans still fit.
Terri Simon, yogi in progress, Vice President of Human Resources at Ignited, El Segundo, living in Santa Monica changing life one asana at a time.
