There is a process to what we do in class:

First, our teacher demonstrates. He sets a standard, something for us to aspire to.

Then, we imitate. At first, our imitation is flawed, rough, clumsy, almost a parody of what we have seen. But with a few corrections and adjustments, we find a semblance of the form.

Then we drill. We repeat the form over and over again, cleaning our movements up, making them richer, fuller, and learning to work with energy, and not with muscle. As the drill starts to make the moves become real.

October brings most of us an increase of work, social get-togethers and other activities. As the days grow shorter and the weather grows cooler, our to-do lists grow longer, social obligations stack up, and immune systems falter. This can cause what’s known in Western culture as good-old-fashioned stress.

FALL RISES UP NORTH

Open your eyelids
and welcome the dim, clouded sunrise.
Breathe deep the crisp morning air
as it seeps in the old, cracked windowpane
I left open all night.
Squint your eyes
and watch the sheer purple curtain
glow slightly
and blow lightly
against the low bookshelves.
Awaken your nose
to the aroma of the heater
in its ceremonial burning of the dust
that has accrued all summer long.
Open your ears
and listen to the raindrops
as they patter
